Courallie J Herefords was established in 2005 at “GLENIDLE” Narrabri by Jim, Poss, David, Matthew and Bec Hann after the dispersal of Courallie Herefords. The decision by the Hann Family to continue breeding stud hereford cattle began with the purchase of cows and heifers from Courallie Hereford Stud, a herd Jim knew well. Jim has judged at numerous regional country shows over the years and also has had the honour of judging at Wodonga Hereford National Show and Sale and at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
The Hann family has a long association with the Hereford Breed since before the inception of the Courallie Hereford stud at Bellata in 1949 by Val & Beryl Hann and their 3 sons Tony, Roger and Jim. Ivanhoe, Golf Hill and Bexley bloodlines provided the main genetic base for the evolvement of the herd for many years. In the 60’s and 70’s sires Thuruna Arbitrator, Ohio Royal Head, Beggan Hill Qantas and Karlyn Lyndon were added to the breeding program. Silverleaf Challenger was aquired in the early 80’s and was the first Hereford bull in Australia to sire progeny selling in excess of $1 000 000. USA and Canadian blood was the next step in the breeding program to increase growth, carcase and later with Line One cattle, Milk.
Female family lines purchased at the dispersal included Carnation, Fancy, Oyster Girl, Koala, Golden Dawn, Sundial, Snowflake, Daffodil, Prudence, Golden Glove, Minerva, Marianne and Constance. Further females have been added from Charvel (Marinda, Nyleta, Necklet and Cherry Ripe), Smithston (Albia, Venus), Bundarra D (Monica) stud dispersals. Our first resident sire Alkira Zephyr Z043 was purchased from the Alkira HS in 2006 in partnership with Westdale HS , we also purchased in the same year a half share in Vena Park Yulara from John Hurley. In 2010 we retained a son of Alkira Zephyr, Courallie J Da Vinci D086 for stud duties and purchased Smithston Don Dingalong D090 at the Smithston annual Bull sale.
In 2008 the decision to introduce Poll Herefords into our program was made with the purchase of 4 females with calves at foot from Grenock PHS at Warialda. Further purchases have been from Evesham and Pine Hill. We also made the purchase of our first Poll sire in 2008, Debarry MR B84 for $16000 at the final Debarry bull sale. In 2010 we purchased Tycolah Hawaii D106 at the annual Tycolah sale for stud heifer duties. In 2012 2 new sires were added to our program, WRL Forum & Allendale Uriah D218.
We also use AI and ET to enhance our genetic gain. AI sires included in our program are CL 1 Domino 252M, Cootharaba Magnum, Charvel Benefit, Yarram Legion C091, Bowmont Storm C093, Yarram Unique F181, Allendale Uriah D218, Bowen Extremist E96 and of recent years Yarram Storm G117, Days Calibre and Minlacowie Griffin.
We have enjoyed success since we commenced. In 2007 we took 3 bulls to Wodonga selling to a top of $18 000 for Courallie Andre to Phil & Lee Whiteside Victoria and an average of $9000 for the three bulls. In 2008 we averaged $15 000 for 2 bulls sold at Wodonga, showing the Reserve Junior Champion Charvel Benefit and selling him for $26 000 to Cootharaba and Cuppa Hereford Studs. Our on property bull sale is held every year at Glenidle where quality affordable bulls are offered. In 2011 we enjoyed our best on property top price for CJ Everton of $11000 to Centennial HS. 2012 saw our best average to date of $4597 and a clearence of 96%.
Our aim is to breed efficient, commercially acceptable cattle of quality, performance and constitution focusing on length, milk, growth and carcase. We are breeding cattle that perform on grass or grain as well as replacement females for your herd. We use and recommend Hereford Group Breedplan, in the form of EBV’s and Market Selection Indexes, as a guide in the selection of cattle alongside the physical appraisal of the animal.
We are proud of our Hereford cattle and with prior arrangement we welcome anyone who wishes to inspect our cattle at anytime
